Why is there a program cost?

To accomplish the mission of SWAP International, to fight global poverty with sustainable development programs, we train and recruit passionate volunteers to travel to underdeveloped countries to serve as human capital for poverty-alleviation efforts. SWAP is as big or as small as the volunteer base that signs up for the teams each year. Although some private funding is used throughout the year to run the organization, the volunteer program fees are how the organization sustains itself.

SWAP charges a program fee in order to cover the living expenses of our volunteers and to fund our projects in our areas of operation and to run the organization at large. This cost may be paid out of pocket or through fundraising. Program fees go toward project costs, housing and food, volunteer support, insurance, volunteer trainings and handbooks, domestic overhead, etc.

When you pay a program fee, you are facilitating impact around the world, as every location costs the same for volunteers but not the same to run on the ground. Your donations are bigger than just the one location you will work at during your program. We are able to achieve great things because of the support of the wonderful participants each year.

A Commitment of Time and Emotion

We hope you love your time working with Service With A Purpose.  It is very common for our volunteers to come back for several mission trips. Although it may sound like a lot of work and expense, those that go almost always wish they could stay longer. You will actively participate in various projects that are designed to give individuals and families the tools they need to successfully lift themselves out of poverty. These projects my include assisting in developing agriculture projects, building schools, irrigation and clean water systems, feeding programs for children and other projects that are needed.

We work hard but we also play hard. You should expect several expeditions in your host country where you will participate in fun adventures and experience the culture in ways a tourist will never get to experience.

It takes time to build relationships, see the progress of projects, and adjust to a new culture. That being said, we know that not everyone is in a position to come for the 12-week internships, so we offer shorter 10-day missions so that everyone has opportunities to be a part of life changing development work and poverty relief.

Whichever way you choose to participate, your commitment and willingness to engage the people we serve will directly impact your experience. Most volunteers become quite emotional at the end of their missions as they prepare to leave the people they have come to love These experiences are real and we encourage you to stay in touch with the people you have connected with.
